Start with the kind of connection you want
Some families want an academic class. Others want friends, projects, outings, or a reason to gather regularly. Write down the main purpose before searching so the group can be evaluated against the family’s actual priorities.
Ask whether the group has a religious or philosophical focus, a particular age range, an attendance expectation, and any membership conditions.
Questions for the organizer
- What is included in each class, and what happens between meetings?
- Must a parent stay, teach, volunteer, or provide supplies?
- How much travel and preparation are involved?
- What are the total fees and refund terms?
- How are communication, behavior expectations, and concerns handled?
- What adjustments are possible for different learning or communication needs?
Try to picture an ordinary week
Consider transport, siblings, food, rest, and work after class. A group that fits one child may still be difficult for the household if the schedule leaves little room for other needs.
Where possible, attend an open gathering or speak with the organizer before making a long commitment. Ask about the experience a new family can expect.
Understand the Maryland distinction
MSDE describes co-ops as a possible supplement to a home instruction program. It also warns that regular daily instruction of an organized group of unrelated students can constitute an unapproved nonpublic school.
Do not assume a co-op automatically provides oversight or replaces the parent’s responsibilities. Ask directly and confirm a full-day group program’s status with MSDE when needed.
Where to look next
MACHE maintains homeschool group and community resources. MSDE also links Maryland homeschool organizations. Use a directory to identify a group, then verify the group’s current activities and requirements directly.
